Biography of Dr Cheng Kwok Shing Gary
Dr Cheng is the Executive Co-Director of the Centre for Learning, Teaching, and Technology (LTTC), the Associate Co-Director of the Global Institute for Emerging Technologies (GIET), and an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). With over two decades of experience in higher education, he specializes in teaching computer studies and information technology. His research focuses on technology-enhanced learning, with projects funded by the university and the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. These projects cover a broad range of topics, primarily centred around using emerging technologies in education (please refer to his project website for more details). Additionally, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to organising conferences, seminars and events that promote coding, STEAM and AI in education. Dr Cheng has published refereed journal articles in prestigious journals such as Computers & Education, The Internet and Higher Education, Interactive Learning Environments, and Educational Technology & Society. Currently, Dr Cheng holds the position of Associate Editor at the open-access journals called Computers & Education: X Reality and Artificial Intelligence in Language Education. He also serves as an Editorial Board Member at Data in Brief.

Biography of Dr Sean McMinn
Dr Sean McMinn joined The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in July 2022 as the Director of Center for Education Innovation. Sean holds a PhD in E-Research and Technology Enhanced Learning from Lancaster University, United Kingdom. He first joined HKUST in 2005 and had since taken up various teaching and leadership roles in the Center for Language Education (CLE) and School of Humanities and Social Science (SHSS). Sean had been the Academic Director of the Master Program in International Language Education offered by SHSS (2018-2020) and the Associate Director of CLE (2020). He left the University in 2021 and joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as Director of the English Language Centre, where he led over 100 academic and non-academic staff members to support the English language teaching and learning for the University.
Having nearly 20 years’ experience in higher education, Sean has taught a range of subjects, such as Business Communications, EAP, Digital Literacies, and Social Complex Systems, and has interests in educational technology, digital literacies, and networked learning. He won a Teaching Innovation Award for his work with podcasts and education at HKUST in 2007 and has published and presented at international conferences on the subjects of MOOCs, social media and education, and digital literacies.

Professor Xu Guandong is a distinguished figure in data science, artificial intelligence, and social computing. His innovative research has earned him many international acclaims. With a penchant for pushing the boundaries of knowledge, he is a trailblazer in applying disruptive technologies to drive research excellence and practise innovation across multi-disciplinary realms.
One of the resounding successes during his academic journey is securing funding of over AU$10 million from the prestigious Australia Research Council, government agencies, and dynamic industry partnerships. This investment reflects the profound impact of his research on both academic and practical domains.
Professor Xu’s scholarly contributions are nothing short of prolific, with more than 240 papers published in leading international journals and revered conference proceedings. His work encompasses a wide spectrum of fields, including recommender systems, information retrieval, data-driven knowledge discovery, and social computing, and continues to garner increasing citations from the academic community. He was listed in the top 2% in the Stanford list of the world’s most-cited scientists for consecutive years.
Beyond his research, he also serves as the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Human-centric Intelligent Systems Journal (Springer) and the Assistant Editor-in-Chief of the World Wide Web Journal (Springer). His visionary role as the founding Steering Committee Chair of the International Conference of Behavioural and Social Computing further underscores his dedication to advancing these dynamic fields and nurturing the next generation of scholars.
In recognition of his profound contributions, he was elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in the United Kingdom and Fellow of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) in both 2021 and 2022.
