Generative AI (GenAI) in Higher Education Assessment: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Directions

Welcome to this research seminar series on Digital Transformations in collaboration with the Section for Higher Education Development.

Presenter: Dr Julia Chen, Associate Professor, Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Date: April 14th, 13:15-14:30 CET via Zoom

Abstract:
The rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is transforming higher education assessment. In response to the generally pragmatic approach of faculty and students at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a multi-step GenAI-in-Assessment strategy has been implemented. This strategy is guided by two fundamental principles and five broad approaches designed to foster authentic learning and critical engagement with GenAI-generated content.

This talk will begin by outlining the GenAI-in-Assessment strategy, showcasing examples of redesigned assessment tasks, and highlighting key opportunities the strategy has created for the university community. Dr. Chen will then discuss emerging challenges, such as cognitive offloading and over-reliance on specific GenAI tools, and share strategies employed at both the institutional and course levels to address them. She will also explore longer-term considerations, including the redefinition of learning and relevance in an AI-enhanced world and approaches to ensuring learning assurance.

By presenting these strategies and examples, this session aims to provide the audience with actionable insights and generalizable best practices for integrating GenAI into higher education assessment effectively.
